My special needs cat – Blind Rufus
I’ve had blind cats for over 10 years now, and think they are the best cats you can have. Even though they fall under the title of “special needs cats” not only does he not have any special needs, he’s even more special to me because of his impairment. People can’t even believe he is blind too. Not only does he not have any issues navigating, even in new environments, but he knows exactly where my lap is when I’m at the computer, and where my chest is when I’m sleeping every night. Having impaired vision tends to reduce his desire to run around like crazy though, but in my mind that is a good thing.
Rufus came to me in 2005. I was told he was an owner surrender and that he was very sweet, so I agreed to adopt him without even looking at him or knowing anything else. When he came home he immediately settled in, and has always been a big ole bundle of love and kisses. He sleeps with me every night, and loves all things a normal cat with vision loves including sleeping in boxes, cheek rubs, food, and catnip. He’s the best cat in the world, in my humble opinion. Over the years I’ve taken a million photos of him, but here are some of my favorites. If you are ever considering adopting a cat and come across a blind one that needs a home, don’t hesitate to adopt. I promise you won’t regret it.
Great photos. Blind cats are the best. I checked out Rufus the Blind Cat and Little the very special kitty pages while looking into adopting a blind kitten. I learned a lot, adopted @magicmaxthecat and love him with all my heart.
Thanks so much for adopting Max – he is a lucky cat to have such an amazing owner.
I just love your Rufus, he’s such a beautiful cat. And you take wonderful pictures of him!
Beautiful pictures and moreover what a handsome kitty! He reminds me so much of my (also blind and one eared) kitty, Dextor. He’s truly the sweetest cat. Keep up the wonderful furry-photography and thank you for all that you do for the animal community!
Gorgeous photos of rufus. So glad you adopted him.
I sponsor a blind cat, Sandy. He is at the Blind Cat Sanctuary in North Carolina. They will not adopt out the cats so I try to help by sponsoring and visit as often as I can. I am visiting San Francisco in September and have an appointment at the KatKafe, where I saw your photos.
Blind cats are amazing. You may want to check out their website at http://www.blindcatsanctuary.com.
